Dr. Sylvia Hollifield

Treasurer

Dr. Hollifield is a Detroit native and has had a lifelong career as an educator. Starting as a K-12 teacher, counselor, and school administrator, she now is on faculty at Michigan State University as an Assistant Professor in the College of Education.

As a musician, Dr. Hollifield has taught vocal music in the public schools of Detroit; Lancaster, OH; and Rochester, NY. She is a self-published composer and owner of Sands Opus 118, LLC. She currently serves as Director of the Cathedral Choir at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit, MI. As an advocate for retaining vocal music for students in public schools, Dr. Hollifield developed Michigan Sings, Inc. a non-profit organization designed to support vocal music programs in grades 7-12. This program provides an opportunity for students to work with composers and conductors from around the country.

Hollifield has served in many capacities as a member of the Detroit Musicians Association, but most recently serves as Treasurer. She has also served on the National Board of the National Association for Negro Musicians for the last seven years, currently serving as the Convention Planning Chair.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Hollifield for her invaluable contributions to the preservation of Black Music.
